“People needed to hear… what we’re fighting *for*.”
GO RIGHT NOW & WATCH BLACKish (S3, Ep12, Lemons)
Every American needs to watch that episode.
BLACKish is a contemporary American comedy – I’ve been meaning to check it out for some time, but never quite got around to it. Then a friend texted me over the weekend and said I *had* to watch Ep12.
I’m so glad I did.
COMEDY – so we can laugh instead of cry (hint: I also cried.)
You *need* to watch the entire episode, but if you can’t, then at least watch the clip.
We are a country torn apart – shocked, hurt, riven, angry, pulling to our opposite corners because we have legitimate grievances and care deeply about what is happening. I’ve personally always been a fervent believer in the message Martin Luther King brought to the country – a shining hope of a time when we can all live together in peace. But it took the gut-punch of this election for me to understand – in a visceral, personal way – the amazing resilience of Black Americans throughout the entirety of our country’s existence right up to today. The heroes of the Black community are American heroes in a way so deep, it’s hard for me to articulate. Because *even when* they are shocked, hurt, riven and angry – even when justice seems like it will *never* come – they still love this country. They keep going, persevere, continue to call for justice and peace.
The exchange between Trump and American hero John Lewis over the weekend is *everything* – Lewis’s decades of work for peace and justice measured against a disparaging tweet by the fear-mongering, soon-to-be President. It’s clear who the hero of that exchange is.
“I have a dream…” Dr. King’s famous speech tells us what we’re fighting for, but just as importantly, it shows WHO we should look to as heroes of the Resistance. Who has already shown the way with resilience and grace in the long battle for justice.
Resist Trump. Fight the policies that will hurt our fellow Americans. But work for the DREAM where we aren’t a nation torn apart anymore… where compassion for ALL PEOPLES wins the day.
And build your resilience by watching S3, Ep12 of a show that’s now at the top of my Must Watch list.
