The president’s assault on the poor and vulnerable in our country continues. Trump’s budget proposal is just that – a proposal. But there are two important things to know about this:
1 – This is Trump’s vision for America, and it’s not just an attack on the poor, but much like the Immigration Ban, it’s an assault on the character of America itself:
“(Under this budget) The country would be an uglier, less equal, less prosperous, more paranoid, more myopic, and more mean-spirited place.”
From cutting school lunch programs to Meals on Wheels, this budget is literally taking food out of the mouths of kids, the elderly, and the disabled (many of which are our Veterans). The entire Meals on Wheels budget is $3M – the same amount the president spends on extra security for one trip down to his Mar-A-Lago estate.
And it’s not just food. It’s jobs training and affordable housing and environmental cleanup and science research – things that help *everyone* in addition to those most in need.
This is the politics of cruelty.
2 – Your Republicans in Congress won’t give him all of this – but they will give a LOT. Now is the time to call your Congressperson…. and keep track of how they vote. I’ve got an app on my phone (Countable) that tells me every time my representatives vote and how. Something I didn’t have to do when the country wasn’t being assaulted by its politicians on a daily basis.
Trump’s jingoist “America First” policy is putting actual Americans last. Do what you can now to #Resist this – and start laying the groundwork to vote out in 2018 the Congresspeople who let this happen.
