“…men consider some of the jobs that will be most in demand — in health care, education and administration — to be unmanly or demeaning, or worry that they require emotional skills they don’t have.”
Here’s a thought: let’s teach boys/men emotional skills.
Here’s another: gender roles hurt EVERYONE.
One more: how about we don’t undervalue/underpay “pink-collar” jobs (especially ones where they can’t fill the vacancies) and then they’d be more attractive to both men and women?
We can’t afford this nonsense going forward – not in the automated economy we’ll be facing in the future. Yet, we’re going BACKWARD in many ways. Culture matters. How we treat women matters. And not just because sexism and misogyny are wrong and result in rape culture and abuse, but because it literally keeps us locked in outdated paradigms that hurt everyone.
Valuing diversity isn’t some hippy dippy slogan. It’s how you adapt to face the problems of the 21st century – by using all the brains and all the skills in all the people.
