Having a tight, action-packed blurb is KEY to selling books. I’m helping April’s consult winner rewrite her blurb this morning, and it’s reminding me once again how important it is to deliver a great story experience in just a few words – it’s a promise to the reader that the book is worth their time.
It’s also reminding me that blurbs are very GENRE DEPENDENT. Look to the bestsellers in your category to see what their blurbs look like. When I rebooted my steampunk fantasy romance series into a sweet Royals romance, I completely rewrote the blurb – it was originally written in a style that worked for steampunk/SF, emphasizing the worldbuilding and the exoticness of the locale. As a romance, I knew the blurb had to be about the PEOPLE, specifically, the couple involved.
Same story; completely different focus. (Note: that reboot was highly successful and that story continues to sell well a month after the big Bookbub splash, making it my best-selling series at the moment!)
More on the reboot here.
