Huit mois plus tôt, Kira Moore a révélé au monde des télépathes que les mindjackers comme elle étaient cachés parmi eux. Désormais, elle se demande si dire la vérité était une bonne chose, après tout.
Alors que des rumeurs abracadabrantesques se répandent, un puissant politicien anti-jacker profite de la peur des télépathes pour dépouiller les jackers de leurs droits.
Alors que certains fuient vers Jackertown, un bidonville rempli de jackworkers qui échangent des faveurs de contrôle d’esprit pour de l’argent, Kira et sa famille se cachent des télépathes qui ont peur d’elle et des jackers qui la détestent.
Mais un membre du Clan fait s’écrouler son petit ami Raf dans ses bras, Kira se voit forcée de sauver les gens qu’elle aime en affrontant la chose qu’elle craint le plus : l’agent Kestrel du FBI et sa chambre de torture expérimentale pour jackers.

Lorsque le politicien anti-jacker Vellus encercle Jackertown avec la garde Nationale, Kira découvre que Julian a bien plus de problèmes qu'elle ne le pensait. Elle se retrouve contrainte de prendre une mission dont personne ne veut et qui pourrait bien être sa dernière : assassiner le sénateur Vellus, avant qu'il puisse mettre à genoux la révolution de Julian et ses jackers qu'elle en est venue à aimer.
