I tend to read a lot of books at once.
Not really sure what my problem is, but if you look at my Goodreads “currently reading” list you would think I have six sets of eyes and an unlimited amount of reading time. In fact, I barely have time to read what I need to (for writing), want to (for the blog), or just have a guilty desire to (Hush, Hush, I’m looking at you).
I chastise my children for starting a new book before they’ve finished the old one, but feel guilty about that. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Are you a multi-book-at-once reader? Or do you carefully work your way through one before tackling another? What about your middle graders?

hi miss susan! for me its only just one book at a time. i get so much caught up in what im reading if its really good i dont want to get it mixed up on something else. so i just do one til its done and then get started on the next one.
…hugs from lenny
@Lenny I could take a lesson from you, Mr. Lee! π
I usually stick with one book at a time. I tend to read really quickly, so it's not usually an issue – I can finish a book in a day if I'm totally hooked π
@Jamie I'm a fast reader, but apparently easily distracted. Then again I read Hunger Games without stopping to eat…so maybe its the books??
Oh, great question! I'm with you, Susan. I like to read a variety at one time, usually for different reasons. A great YA/MA novel for relaxation, a non-fiction (usually history) for professional development, and a dash of poetry to keep me human.
@Darby There you go – variety! I'm such a new-ness addict, it's really not funny.
I'm pretty much into one book at a time (although I will listen to a different audiobook late at night). The reason for this is that I get so pulled into a story that I don't want to lose the thread. If a book doesn't pull me in, I either force myself to finish to get it over with (learn from its mistakes) or it gets set aside and never picked up again.
I can't read more than one book at a time, it's a weird OCD thing for me. I am also not allowed to leave a book unfinished, even if it hurts my brain. π
@Tricia & @Ken I used to be like that – finish a book till the end, even if it hurts. I think my brain has shifted.
I usually have two or three that I'm reading at a time. I read at really random times (blowdrying my hair, cooking dinner, stoplights, etc) so I often have books I read in different places. A book in my car for the shuttle trips and long stoplights/traffic jams. A book on my bed to read before I fall asleep. A book in the bathroom for when I'm getting ready. The books I can't put down are the ones that tag along to each location.
Multiple book reader here. I have a stack and when it topples I get serious about one at a time. Glad you're not my mom because you'd be all over me all the time. π
@Sierra OK, I think it's genetic! That's exactly what my mom does – a book in every nook in the house. Now I don't feel so bad…
@CLee π Apparently, I need to cut the kids some slack. π
Only one book at a time for me during the school year. With my busy schedule I like to stick to one novel when I have the time to read.
The only exception would be if I was waiting to read a particular novel, I'll stop reading the other. But rarely both at the same time. Like Tricia, I get pulled into the story and don't want to shift focus til I'm done
Our house was full of books, all being read at the same time. Now they are older and living in their own homes, my children still have them lying around in rooms various. π
I try very hard to limit myself to one book at a time. Most of the time, I succeed. π
P.S. I was reading through some of the contest comments, and I want to say that I.LOVE.YOUR.HEADER! LOL. π
@Suzie I admire your focus! π
@Glynis See! It is genetic! Or perhaps the environment. I always get those confused. π
@Shannon Thanks for the header love! I'm unlikely to change it any time soon. Mostly because of laziness. Also: lack of talent. π
Personally, I stick with one book at a time. I enjoy stories, and read every single word.
My 12 year old just wants to get through the book. Its a chore. He's liked a few books to read on his own. But I'd say he's a single book reader too.
…….dhole
Nope! I read one book, almost non-stop, often in one sitting, until it's done.

@Donna I skip through my books, but not because they're a chore – because I want to get to the end! I'm impatient. π
@Beth Good for you! π
I don't like reading more than one fiction book at a time, even beta reading. Sometimes it happens and I get the two worlds confused.
@Adam You know, I hadn't realized it, but I do that too – if I'm beta-reading a novel (not just a chapter or partial), I stop reading anything else until I'm done. Hmm…I guess I give more attention to those than reading for fun. π
I have different books in different rooms. I never have two books in the same genre going at the same time…That would be confusing…
LOL, Sue, you make me laugh. π
I'm the same way. I have at least six novels with bookmarks in them, and two nonfiction. I'm not sure why I do this to myself. I guess I read until I'm interrupted and if the story wasn't calling me back enough, I pick up something else!
