Writers are an odd lot.
Mostly happy with their notebook (electronic or paper) and their imagination, they can be difficult to shop for. But the holidays are upon us, and in the interests of helping out all your family members who are scratching their heads and wondering what to get you, here are few suggestions when shopping for a writer:
The Usual Suspects
- Moleskin notebooks
- pens
- books of any kind
The Bold and Beautiful
Although I must say this looks painful to wear.
Awesome Vintage Typewriter (no necklace)
Novelty T-shirt
*because you know you want it*
*you know you want this too*
Steampunk Goggles – just because
Customized Starbucks Card – caffeine is always appreciated
A special t-shirt for writers who blog and no longer feel the need to apologize for it.
From the Uber Supportive Family Member
Attendance at a Local Writer’s Conference or Workshop (or membership in a writer’s association)
Subscription to Publisher’s Weekly
Of course the most valuable gift to give a writer: quality time with their manuscript.
If you’re a writer, what gift would you most like to receive this holiday? (No, you may not say “whirled peas”)
p.s. late-breaking addition … because he’s so cute …
Writer Mouse from Starbucks!! (thank you Robin Lucas)
p.p.s. Another late breaking addition (thank to Kelly Hashway) – E-readers! Lord have mercy, how did I forget those?

Chocolate keyboard…major danger!! I'd get nothing done. Love the T-shirt, too!
Haha, I love both t-shirts and the chocolate keyboard. Thanks for expanding my Christmas wish list. π
Books, wonderful books. There's nothing quite like them. π
Also loved the chocolate keyboard and t-shirt.
The LA SCBWI conference is my Christmas present ('cause beyond books, there isn't much else I really want). And I just signed up for membership in the RWA and YA RWA, which will also be my present. π
Definitely the quality time to do some major work on my novel. And maybe a few solutions to plot stumbling blocks!
@Sheri Yes, chocolate has to be carefully controlled at our house! π
@Jenn You are most welcome. π
@Stina The LA conf was my present too! And HEY I didn't know there was a YA RWA!! I'll have to check that out…
@Andrea My wish list to my family actually says "contract with a major publisher" on it – I figure, I've been good, right? π
omg, quality time w/my MS! Followed closely by the chocolate keyboard & steampunk goggles. Oh, and the T-shirt. B/c, as you put it. You know. π
@LTM I'm hoping my husband reads this blog, just for the goggles. π
@Everyone Late breaking addition: Writer Mouse! (see amended blog post above)
A paid-for hotel room for a month with no interruptions. Asking too much? Probably.
Hee Hee – I alway love that t-shirt. One day, I should just buy it! I also love the necklace.
A friend gave me a necklace once that had my initial on an old typewriter key. I love it! But, boy, would I love the uber-present of a writing conference. You got that right. What a fun post.
those are such cute ideas! really loving the chocolate keyboard myself. i think the type writer necklace would have been better if they put a chain on either side so it kind of stood up the right way.

@Laura Maybe not for a month…but for a few days?? Actually, the hubs and I regularly swap 24-hour-vacations where one goes off on retreat while the other holds down the fort. Last year, I used mine for a 24-hour writing blitz in a hotel with WiFi. It was intense.
@ketch I've been eyeing it for a while too! π
@Tricia That is so cool! I love creative friends. π
@Elizabeth I know, right?
The t-shirt is awesome! That chocolate keyboard sure wouldn't last long around me.
I just finished my wish list last night.
Scrivener for Windows
The Hunger Games Trilogy
Membership to American Christian Fiction Writers
Attendance at ACFW Annual Conference in St. Louis
That last one's expensive, but it's not until September, so let the savings begin. I thought about adding a "Donate" button to my blog, but then realized that would require that people actually read my blog, which might require that I update my blog, and. . . vicious cycle. I think I'll just go finish that manuscript.
Oh, I have one of those old behemoth typewrites. An black beast of an Underwood.
For Christmas? Gosh…um…I have no idea.
My top choice is a Kindle 3G. I would love a subscription to Publisher's Weekly, too!
Wonderful post!!! π
I have the novel t-shirt. My mom bought it for me as a joke. π
hi miss susan! wow if i gotta choose off your list im picking that chocolate keyboard any tee shirt cause i love tee shirts and those steampunk goggles are soooo cool! for the thing i could wish for most thats not on that list is that i could stay alive long enough to get my stories im doing all done. i could want to live longer but for sure but i could really want my writing done if i dont.
…hugs from lenny
Awesome post – I'll be passing along the chocolate keyboard and the PW subscription to my hubby as ideas for me.
Here's a couple other ideas:
A portable harddrive to back up all those stories
Another uber-gift: new laptop
A gift I received a few years back that Victoria Michaels gave me was a bling-ed out sharpie for autographs – a fun stocking stuffer for writers.
Maybe an iTunes card if music is your muse?
Thanks for the great ideas, Susan!
@Jennifer LOL I know!
@Erynn I love your list!! And when you read Hunger Games, let me know! Also: I have it on the Nook if you want to borrow. π
@Darby I'm jealous of your typewriter! π
@Kelly Ack!! How did I forget e-readers?? *runs to update post*
@Nicole Thanks for stopping by!
@Caroline Your mom is awesome.
@Lenny My wish for Christmas is that you get to finish all your stories too! Not only write, but share – I hope you are sharing your stories as you go? I know there are lots of people who would like to see them. π
@Robin Those are awesome ideas, especially the backup hard drive!! That's a necessity. π
Oh, I think I'm drooling on my non-chocolate keyboard, Susan! Can you be my Santa Claus this year?
I saw the mouse at Starbucks and very nearly bought him for myself – so cute! And those goggles are amazing and I would kill to go to a writing conference and…and…and… Although, I did talk my hubby into a Kindle – early – and it should be here TODAY!! π
@Shannon Your hubby rawks! π I really hope someone gets me the mouse.
Oh please sign me up for a couple of those chocolate keyboards! I'll be one happy writer with those by my side π
It would be very nice to see all of them under my tree, but books for my iPad will make me happy. π
@Joanne Nom, nom, nom. π
@Beverly Does iPad have a gift-card-app for that? π
Love, love , love the chocolate keyboard! I also saw some good writers' coffee mugs on cafepress.com
@Catherine Now, if I could just find a good writer's tea cup! π
chocoalte keyboard. Yummy!
I am, like, buying a chocolate keyboard right now. RIGHT NOW.
Luckily I already have the antique typewriter.
And it should be said that I'll french kiss anyone who gives me a bookstore gift card.
@writesbymoonlight You have the coolest moniker. Ever. π
@Bryan You know I covet your beauty of a typewriter. And does your wife know about the gift card deal? π
Ssshhh… (I need those gift cards)
LOL!
