I love the library.
Whether it’s checking out a crazy number of picture books when my boys were small, or taking on the summer reading challenge, or just retreating for an afternoon of quiet writing time (with WiFi!), the library is simply made of awesome. I show my support by vying for the most-library-fines-paid award each year.
Like much of the literacy industry, libraries have dipped into the Web2.0 world with blogs, twitter, Facebook, etc. in an effort to reach library patrons.
My local Palatine Library is a great supporter of local authors as well, and has posted an interview of me on their cool Teen Blog. I’m also hoping to do some kind of blog-collaboration with them in the future. Maybe reviews? Maybe chatting with some teen writers about craft? I’m not sure what Master Librarian Megan and I will dream up, but I’m certain it will be awesome. And fun.
I love the library. Wait, did I say that already?
p.s. the kids are out of school for Thanksgiving week, so my available free time is asymptotically approaching zero. Ink Spells will take a short break and return after the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving to all my U.S. blog-friends!
Have a great holiday, Susan!! π
How can you not love libraries? A great gift to our society, to be sure. I love our school library and help lead a once-a-week book club at lunch with about 30 junior hight students (spread over two lunches).
The librarian and I even started a blog about it. Check it out when you get a chance. Modest, but it's a start. http://www.cmjh.blogspot.com
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Oops. That's http://www.cmjhlibrary.blogspot.com
Ooo, I love libraries too. They were kind of my sanctuary as a kid. Hopping over to check out your interview now!
@Shannon You too! π
@Darby I love your school blog! And go you, for all the reading and working with the kids that you do! π
@Shannon Funny, I didn't use the library as much as a kid – it wasn't as accessible and awesome as the Palatine library we have. And the Palatine library has ALWAYS been this way – my husband grew up here and worked in the library!
hi miss susan! we got a neat library and it just really close to our house. i like going there cause seeing all those books get me soooo excited. for now i got a bunch to read so i didnt go for a while. i looked up that word asymptotically cause i look up stuff i dont know and now i still dont know what it means. asymptote – a straight line associated with a curve such that as a point moves along an infinite branch of the curve the distance from the point to the line approaches zero and the slope of the curve at the point approaches the slope of the line. yikes!! that got flying way high over my head. ha ha. i hope you have a really fun and nice thanksgiving.
…hugs from lenny
Wow, thank you so much for your enthusiastic support and kind words, Susan (and Darby and others!) We appreciate all the great participation we get from our community members. Without you, the library would be an empty, boring place!
@Lenny I'm all kinds of happy that you looked that word up! π Basically it means that my time is getting squeezed to zero, but I think you figured it out! Have a great Thanksgiving!
@Megan I love that the library is a gathering place for the community! And I can't wait to chat. π
Considering the number of books I've borrowed from the library, I certainly don't complain when I get an overdue fine. I feel that's the least I can do. π
yay for libraries! Happy US Thanksgiving!
I wouldn't have my love for books without growing up with my local library!
@Stina My thoughts exactly! π
@Terry Happy Thanksgiving!
@Lydia Funny, I didn't use it when I was young, but my kids certainly have. π Thanks for stopping by!
Ha! You should see my library To Be Read list…
@Bryan My dad was the king of the "on hold" option at the library … which I never understood until now. π
A good library is like a box of chocolates: sweet and memorable.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
@MT Awesome! π
The library is my new best friend for three reasons–we've been friends most of my life, but I'm bonding in new ways:
1) My weekly trip to the library with the little girl I nanny. We pick out board books, I walk her around the YA section to find new books for me, and get out of the house!
2) Because I couldn't read during NaNo, I started requesting books "for research" and the library graciously let me check out 18 books to read once I met my goal. (It's crazy I know).
3) I'm building new relationships with the librarians as they help me find new books and host NaNo events. I even won a NC Writers Network scholarship from them. I'm very much looking forward to the day I can partner with them as a published author π
What would we writer/readers do without them?
@Charity I love that you are taking the wee one to the library! And I didn't realize that was where you got your scholarship – awesome! Libraries rock.
