If you publish books, you should have a mailing list. Period.
Really. It’s that simple.
David Gaughran has a great post today on all the reasons why, but the main thing is this: direct connection between you and your readers.
As David says, the idea is not to clutter up your readers inboxes with newsletters, but mainly to let them know when your next book comes out. You don’t have to create new content, run lots of contests (but you can, if you like), or worry about providing “value” to your newsletter subscribers. Most often, they are signing up because they enjoy your work. The value of the newsletter (to both you and them) is letting them know when that next new release comes out.
In that spirit, feel free to sign up for my author newsletter, if you haven’t already! I promise to let you know when that steampunk book finally gets written and when I launch that crazy serial idea that I have (and I won’t clutter up your inbox too often).

Definitely on my 'to do' Susan. Thanks for sharing David's link, and the shove. 🙂
I've already signed up for yours. And I look at it for examples of what to do if I ever get published. I agree with you that a newsletter is very important.
I've enjoyed getting yours. Working on building one jointly with Gwen for PIP (Partners in ParanormYA).
Is this different than having people subscribe to your blog?
It's on my to do list but I get confused every time I try. And then my mind wanders onto something else.
Great information and an idea I need to chase down and make happen. Thanks Susan!
Thanks for the advice. I've signed up for one.

Yep, I agree a mailing list is important. And I did manage to get one on my blog… but getting people to sign up for it is a different matter. Even on my ESIvy blog (which is on wordpress as opposed to my series blog on blogger)that has 10-30 looks a day, I can't manage to get any momentum on my mailing list. Any tips there?
Yes, I agree they are important. The only reason that I don't have one is because I don't know how to make the nifty little sign up doodad. Suggestions?
