
MEDITATION
I keep talking about it because I truly believe it’s the antidote to the unique stressors of the 21st century–the “always on” lifestyle, the pressure to always do more, the idea that constant striving is the only way to live rather than a way not to live at all.
But people hesitate.
Maybe they think it won’t “work” for them, or they don’t believe in that woo-woo stuff (as if meditation doesn’t have tons of science behind it), or they simply don’t know where to start.
So, here’s the Easy 1-2-3 to TRY meditation.
1 – KNOW THAT YOU CAN’T “FAIL” AT MEDITATION. The more difficult it is for you to be still, focus, and simply breathe, the more you will get out of trying. It’s like exercise for your brain–each time you let go of a thought and bring yourself back to focusing, you’re strengthening your ability to do so.
2 – WATCH THIS 10 MIN TED TALK. This video gives you a run-down of all the basics–how meditation works, why it helps, what the science is behind it.
3 – TRY IT FOR FIVE MINUTES. Download the Headspace App to your phone (it’s free to try), and just sit down and do the introductory session. It’s five minutes. Five minutes seems ridiculously short (and it is), but it’s amazing what five minutes of clearing your head and stilling your body can do for your stress level.
